As part of their traditional Epiphany trips, the Zollernbahn Railway Friends are offering a round trip from Rottweil via Tuttlingen and Singen to Radolfzell on Lake Constance on January 7, 2024. From there, the Ablachtalbahn, opened in 1873 by the Grand Ducal Baden State Railway, will be used to travel to Mengen on the Danube. It was intended to be part of a long-distance connection from Ulm to western Lake Constance and Switzerland, but this never happened due to a lack of demand. In 1960, all traffic between Mengen and Krauchenwies was stopped and the line was dismantled, as was the branch from Krauchenwies to Sigmaringen in 1971. Further closures between Krauchenwies and Stahringen followed from 1969 to 1982, but the track was retained. Thanks to the commitment of the Tegometall company from Krauchenwies, the Mengen-Krauchenwies section of the line was rebuilt for freight traffic in 1986. Since summer 2021, there has been an excursion service on Sundays and public holidays on the route, which is otherwise only occasionally used by freight and special trains. We accompany the special steam train from the former Schwackenreute junction station on its journey to Herbertingen on the Danube Valley Railway. In Sauldorf and Menningen, the mock entries, popular with filmmakers and photographers, take place and in Meßkirch, water is taken in during a slightly longer stop. In Herbertingen, the direction of travel changes for the return journey through the Danube Valley to Rottweil.
