27. 4. 2023 Brno Observatory and Planetarium www.hvezdarna.cz/program SECRETS OF GENES - FROM THE ORIGIN OF LIFE TO THE HUMAN GENOME doc. RNDr. Eduard Kejnovský, CSc. Institute of Biophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic https://www.ibp.cz/cs/ What is life, how and where did it originate? How did the evolution of life proceed? What can our genome tell us? The lecture by Brno geneticist Eduard Kejnovský will attempt to answer these and similar questions. The lecture will deal with possible scenarios of the origins of life on Earth and describe the story of the evolution of genetic information from the first replicating molecules based on RNA through the emergence of the genetic code, the emergence of DNA molecules, to the first cells and the subsequent development of bacteria, animals and plants. The human genome has been read and the time has come when you can read your own genome. We will try to answer the questions - what will the new possibilities of genomics bring us? After all, we can not only read genomes, but we are also starting to write them. Will DNA reveal to us what makes a person human? The guest will be MU Vice-Rector Prof. Šárka Pospíšilová, who will give an engaging talk about the exhumation and genetic analysis of Gregor Mendel, the founder of genetics.
