And that fort had been built to cover with fire three large steel bridges, bridges that had to be crossed by German divisions to enter the heart of Belgium. But if the Germans could be stopped there, the French and British armies could arrive to reinforce the Belgian and Dutch forces, and stop the German offensive in its tracks.
