How do children and adults cope with the effects of trauma? When can we talk about post-traumatic disorders? Who should we seek help from when the effects of trauma disorganize our lives? Dr. Elżbieta Zdankiewicz-Ścigała, psychologist and therapist from SWPS University, author of the book "Alexithymia and dissociation as basic factors of post-traumatic phenomena", talks about alexithymia, or the tendency to "emotional blindness" and dissociative disorders. The lecture concerns the analysis of mental processes occurring during coping with the effects of trauma. The audience learns when remembering the experienced trauma can be an important anchor, which - when we start to rush - restores our system of values, corrects our tendencies and indicates that the most important thing in life is... life, and when it becomes a difficult to assimilate and overwhelming experience that casts a shadow on the entire later life. The determinants of these very complex and painful processes were discussed: alexithymia, or the tendency to "emotional blindness" and dissociation, or the tendency to "disconnect" in potentially traumatic situations. About the speaker: Dr. Elżbieta Zdankiewicz-Ścigała - psychologist, PhD in humanities. Works at SWPS University in Warsaw.
