Shortly after Mihai Comanesteanu's departure from the country, the nobleman Dinu Murgulet married his daughter, Tincuta, to Tanase Scatiu. Their marriage is a torment for Tincuta. Seeing Mihai again after a few years, Tincuta realizes that she still loves him... In the meantime, Tanase Scatiu moves to the county capital, becomes a wealthy man and is elected deputy, but he terrorizes everyone in his house and from his estate. On the occasion of a visit to the area by the Minister of the Interior, the peasants submit a complaint in which they complain about the treatment they receive. The minister asks Mihai Comanesteanu, who has become his chief of staff, to deal with the case. This is how Mihai sees himself with Tincuta. One month after the minister's visit, Tincuta dies of unhappiness. Tanase Scatiu pretends to be in pain... but he catches his father-in-law, Dinu Murgulet, and gives him bad thoughts.
