The action takes place in the village of Ciulniței, on the edge of the Bărăganului Plain, in the last years of the 19th century. At the center of the action are the families owning the estates, Murgulet and Comăneșteanu, but also the Scatiu family, which manages the Balta estate. Coana Diamandula, the sister of nobleman Dinu Murgulet, is on her deathbed and calls her son, Matei, home. He had gone to study abroad seven years ago. His last wish is for him to take care of the fortune together with the boyar Dinu and marry a girl from the village. Also, his mother advises him to try to get to know Sașa better, the daughter of the nobleman Costică, the one who takes care of the family and the family estate after his father's death. The young man respects his mother's last wish and realizes that the poor harvests in recent years were caused by the lack of organization of the administrator Nae Eftimiu, but also by the neglect of the peasants. The family friend, Sașa Comăneșteanu, gives him advice that could help him increase his productivity...
