Cascavel is a Brazilian municipality located in the western region of the state of Paraná, of which it is the fifth most populous, with 348,051 inhabitants, according to the 2022 census. The road distance to Curitiba, the state administrative capital, is 491 kilometers, and to Brasília, the federal capital, is 1,457 kilometers. Considerably new and with a privileged topography, its development was planned, which gave it wide streets and well-distributed neighborhoods, with the fourth best planning and urbanism in the country, according to the Connected Smart Cities Ranking 2020. With an area of 2,101.074 km², it is the sixth largest municipality in the state, has the twelfth largest population in the South Region, is the headquarters of the Cascavel Metropolitan Region, regional capital of Western Paraná and a strategic hub of Mercosur. The beginning: The Caingangue Indians inhabited this region, which was first occupied by the Spanish in 1557, when they founded Ciudad del Guairá, now Guaíra. A new occupation began in 1730, with the cattle drive, but the settlement of the area of the current municipality effectively began in the late 1910s, by caboclo settlers and descendants of Slavic immigrants, at the height of the yerba mate cycle. The town began to take shape on March 28, 1928, when José Silvério de Oliveira, known as Nhô Jeca, leased land from settler Antônio José Elias, where the Encruzilhada dos Gomes was located, located at the junction of several trails opened by yerba mate collectors, cattle drivers and soldiers, where he set up his store. His entrepreneurial spirit was essential for the arrival of new people, who brought ideas and investments. In the 1930s, with the yerba mate cycle already extinct, the timber cycle began, which attracted a large number of families from Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and, in particular, Polish, German and Italian settlers, who together formed the population base of the town. In 1934, the Cascavel police district was created. Later, the judicial district and the administrative district were established, all part of the municipality of Foz do Iguaçu. As the native forest areas were depleted, logging gave way to the agricultural sector, which has been the economic base of the municipality to this day. The town was officially declared a city by the city government of Foz do Iguaçu in 1936, already under the name Cascavel. However, the prelate of that city, Monsignor Guilherme Maria Thiletzek, renamed it Aparecida dos Portos, a name that did not catch on with the population. On October 20, 1938, already under the definitive name of Cascavel, the town was elevated to the status of the seat of an administrative district, under the terms of Law No. 7,573. Emancipation finally occurred on December 14, 1952, together with the neighboring city of Toledo, but for a long time the celebration was held on November 14 of each year, due to confusion between the proposal of the state governor at the time and the actual signing of the law. With the end of the timber cycle in the late 1970s, Cascavel began the city's industrialization phase, along with the increase in agricultural activity, notably soybeans and corn. The term 'cascavel' comes from a variation of the classical Latin “caccabus”, which means 'boiling water bubbling'. According to legend, the name came from a group of settlers who, spending the night near a river, discovered a large nest of rattlesnakes, and so named the place “Cascavel”. The sound of the rattle gave rise to the name of the serpent: from the Latin “tintinnabulum”, literally “the ringing of the rattle”. A symbol of power and wisdom, the serpent was worshipped in ancient times. ????????????????????Discover our partner channels????????????????????
