The Serra Fina is a section of the Serra da Mantiqueira, which is one of the most important mountain ranges in Brazil. It largely coincides with the Maciço Alcalino de Passa Quatro and is almost entirely located on the border between the states of Minas Gerais (municipality of Passa Quatro, with a very small area in the municipality of Itanhandu) and São Paulo (municipalities of Lavrinhas and Queluz), but its eastern end also reaches the state of Rio de Janeiro (municipality of Resende). It is neighboring the Maciço de Itatiaia, where the Itatiaia National Park and the Agulhas Negras peak are located; the two massifs are visible from each other. The Serra Fina has one of the greatest topographical differences in Brazilian territory (more than 2,200 m from the top of Pedra da Mina to the base of the mountain on the São Paulo side, in the Paraíba Valley) and the fourth highest mountain in Brazil: Pedra da Mina (2,798 m). At the eastern end of Serra Fina, the Pico dos Três Estados (2,665 m) also stands out, at the top of which is the triple point where the borders of the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro meet.[1] As is usual in this section of the Serra da Mantiqueira, the southern slope is much steeper than the northern slope, which is why most climbs are made on the Minas Gerais side.
