Dredging of park ponds has actually started On 27 March 2014, we were in the Anton van Duinkerken park in Bergen op Zoom where the dredging of the ponds has now actually started. The 100 cm thick layer of mud is being scooped away by a crane and loaded into trucks. Trucks that transport more than 40 tons of mud per load to Heenvliet where the sludge is stored to settle in a depot and possibly treated if it is contaminated. The job in the park is being carried out by the Oomen construction company from Sprundel. They have a nice job that will take several months. New revetments are also being installed on the banks and the famous island is also being given extra protection against erosion with special revetments. The island is currently a real island again because the famous bridge was removed on 19 March to be transported to a company where the bridge will be treated. It will soon come back from there as good as new. The island is not really an island at the moment because an island is a piece of land surrounded by water. There is no more water in the ponds because they have been pumped dry so the island is now part of the mainland of the park. Well....... Let's not split hairs. The park is officially closed for the time being but that is just a sign that indicates this because you can still enter from all sides and enjoy the blossoming nature. But also the work that is spectacular. It will all turn out well and when the work is completely finished Bergen op Zoom can continue with the park for many years to come.
