We’ve got our hands on ALL generations of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, and they’re about to go head-to-head in some epic drag racing! We’ve split it into two series – the Mk 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the first series, after which we’ll have a second run with the 5, 6, 7 and 8.5 to see how the Golf GTI has evolved over the years. It all starts with the Mk 1. It’s powered by a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine that produces 110hp and 140Nm. This power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox, and the car weighs just 810kg. When new, it cost around £6,500. The line-up then moves up to the new Mk 8.5 edition. This car is powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine that develops 265bhp and 370Nm. This power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and weighs 1,391kg. As new, the car costs around £39,000. So the newest car is likely to win, but will one of the older models spring a surprise? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!
