Her origins on the Peruvian side lie in the indigenous people of the Amazon, the Ashaninka, who live in the area of ​​present-day Peru and Brazil, namely the northwestern region of Brazil called "Acre", which is located in the Amazon rainforest. This is a population whose number is not fully known, as they are spread across the provinces of Junin, Pasco, Huanuco and parts of Ucayali. Their way of life has remained largely traditional, but they have also been in contact with Western civilization for a long time, and at the same time they live lives between worlds, while their living environment is drastically reduced and destroyed by the exploitation of the Amazon rainforest. Maya has spent her life between two identities, one is Serbian, Yugoslav, Balkan, and the other is Peruvian, that is, the Ashaninka identity. She has spent a lot of time with them and has intimate insights into their culture, language, but also traditions and customs, which include the folk medicine of the indigenous peoples of the upper Amazon, including ayahuasca, cambo medicine and other well-known and lesser-known customs and rituals of that region and those peoples. In addition to the anthropological and ethnological aspect of this story, there is also the medical side, that is, the professional cooperation of Maya and several neuropsychiatrists from this region to contribute to the development of these disciplines in official medicine through research. In this regard, Maja is officially a member of the "Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies", better known as "MAPS", which has been fighting for a better understanding of hallucinogenic substances and their use in medicine since 1968, primarily in the fight against depression and trauma.
