The bells of the Protestant church in Syburg, a town in the Ruhr region that is part of Dortmund, are ringing. There was probably a previous building on the site of the current church before 776. A Romanesque church was built around 1100, and the tower was added to it around 1200. The Gothic choir was probably built in the 14th/15th century and was partially renovated in the 17th century. An aerial bomb destroyed parts of the nave in March 1945. The tower remained largely undamaged. Reconstruction and renovation work were completed by 1963. Valuable items of equipment include three gravestones from the Carolingian and Merovingian periods, an early Romanesque baptismal font from Lütgendortmund, a Zurich Bible from 1745, and a pulpit from Alswede from 1573. Two of the three bells are also historically valuable. The bells are located behind the sound windows and the clock in the area of the tower roof and can only be reached via a hatch in the ceiling of the upper tower room. The former bells consisted of two bells from 1584 and a large recast bell by Wilhelm Rincker from Westhofen from 1850. The smallest bell fell victim to the First World War, the large bell to the Second World War. The middle bell from 1584 remains. It was purchased together with its smaller sister, which no longer exists, after the Reformation had already been introduced in Syburg in 1570. The bell was cast by Hinrich van Collen and bears the following inscription: EN EGO CAMPANA (R) NUNQVAM (R) DENUNCIO (R) VANA Translation: I, the bell, never proclaim vain things HINRICH VAN COLLEN GVS MICH IM IAR 1584 HERMANNVS VAN S (R) ODINGEN (R) VND HERMAN NIGEHVS BEIDE KIRCH MEISTER GEWEST This only remaining bell was supplemented after the Second World War by a loan bell from Köselitz in Pomerania. It was cast in 1681 by Lorentz Köckeritz in Stettin and bears various ornaments. In 1961, the Rincker bell foundry cast the large bell with the inscription on the side: CREDO UNAM SANCTAM ECCLESIAM / AD MCMLXI Translation: I believe in the one holy church On the back: IN MEMORIAM / ADOLPH BOELLING OVERWEG / 1875 – 1953 Bell data: Bell 1 Cast in 1961 Foundry: Rincker bell foundry, Sinn Diameter: 995 mm Weight: approx. 700 kg* Nominal/strike tone: g'+7 Bell 2 Cast in: 1584 Foundry: Hinrich van Collen Diameter: 990 mm Weight: approx. 600 kg* Nominal/strike tone: a'+5 Bell 3 Cast in: 1681 Foundry: Lorentz Köckeritz, Stettin Diameter: 775 mm Weight: 240 kg Nominal/strike tone: b'+14 *In the literature used (see below), the weight of bell 1 is given as 600 kg and that of bell 2 as 700 kg, probably a mix-up.
