▶ Donggang River, a magnificent 51km long waterway where Odaecheon River, which originates from Odaesan Mountain in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do, and Joyang River, which flows through the northern part of Jeongseon, meet and wind through the steep mountains to Yeongwol. Donggang River flows 120ri while preserving its pristine natural landscape, forming cliffs and fostering countless lives. The mystery of Donggang River, created by limestone, and the story of life along the winding river unfold. 1. Donggang River, a meandering stream Donggang River is a 51km long waterway that winds through Jeongseon, Pyeongchang, and Yeongwol in Gangwon-do. Donggang River is a typical meandering stream (a river with a meandering shape) that flows along the rugged cliffs and steep valleys of Gangwon-do. The Donggang River basin, a limestone area formed by uplift 450 million years ago, formed its current topography about 200 million years ago, and is still undergoing sedimentation and erosion due to river movement. Donggang has a spectacular view of winding waterways and red mudflats, including natural caves formed by ground movement and the dissolution of groundwater and limestone (the chemical dissolution of rocks by water). Except for some sections, Donggang is still inaccessible to humans, and has preserved the original form of the ecosystem in the midst of nature for a long time. 2. Live in Donggang The relics and artifacts scattered throughout the Donggang River basin tell us that people have lived near the winding stream of Donggang River since prehistoric times. There are still people who protect Donggang today. Just a few bends downstream from the Donggang Halmi Flower Colony, there is a turtle village with a turtle-like shape that resembles a turtle entering the water. Although it is called a village, there is only one household left in this place, and the Jeong Yong-hwa brothers make flower tea containing the life of Donggang by picking beautiful buds. Gajeong Village, a remote village that can only be reached by boat, once had about 20 households, but most of them have left for the city, and now only five households remain. While picking flowers, you can sympathize with nature, and meet the affectionate and simple daily lives of people who live as part of the river in a land of history filled with the joys and sorrows of life. 3. The secret of Donggang’s formation, limestone caves During the rainy season, when it rains, Donggang quickly swells. This is because the river is narrow and deep. Groundwater pours out from numerous caves in the limestone zone. There are 71 large and small limestone caves here, formed as the water flowing into Donggang passed through the limestone zone over a long period of time. The most representative of the limestone caves is Baekryong Cave, designated as Natural Monument No. 260. Baekryong Cave, discovered by a local resident in 1976, contains a variety of stalactites and stalagmites that were formed when limestone was washed away and dissolved over hundreds of millions of years. Baekryong Cave, which was first opened to the public in 2010, preserves the original form of a limestone cave without any trace, allowing visitors to see the mysterious and spectacular scenery of a dark world where various cave formations are preserved. 4. Life enriches the river The Donggang River has groundwater springing from the bottom, making the river water clear and cold. The eel (Natural Monument No. 259), which lives only in clean water, builds a stone tower during the spawning season. After repeatedly stacking stones and laying eggs, the mother eel pours all her energy into building a 5-8cm tower so that she does not lose her eggs, and then exposes herself to the Donggang River. The holes in the limestone cliffs that surround the Donggang River like a folding screen become a treasure trove for life. When it's time to spawn, the ibis come to limestone caves to lay eggs.
