Regardless of whether it is gender, diversity or climate activism: what is necessary for some to draw attention to grievances and disadvantages is far too “woke” for others, overly politically correct and more likely to create differences, a “climate of fear” or even injustice. The term “wokeness” has become a political battle cry. Why do two irreconcilable camps seem to be facing each other on this issue? And does “wokeness” ultimately make our society fairer? We discussed this in 13 questions and tried to clear up one or two misunderstandings, clichés or prejudices. Our participants: Caroline Bosbach, moderator & federal chairwoman of the Economic Council (CDU) Hasnain Kazim, journalist & author Christoph Ploß, CDU federal member of parliament Maurice Conrad, software engineer & activist Alice Hasters, author & podcaster Susanne Beyer, journalist at Spiegel Chapter: 00:00 Intro 00:33 Does “wokeness” make our society fairer? 01:47 Who would you describe as “woke”? 06:50 Can “wokeness” create new injustices? 11:42 Are people now too quickly labelled as racist? 14:54 Do you also find it problematic to tar all “woke” movements with the same brush? 18:44 What is problematic about the term “woke”? 21:04 Have you ever been forced to use gender-neutral language? 27:14 What can we do about the fear and anger in society? 29:09 Do most people just want everything to stay as it is? 30:01 What needs to change in current communication? 35:43 Can we agree that we should refrain from using “woke” as a term of battle in order to avoid further stabilising camps? 39:10 Can we agree that we need a self-confident policy for minorities and that we should not play pressing social issues off against each other? 40:11 Can we agree that in the future we need more constructive cooperation and less prejudice? 13 Questions is a format from ZDFkultur.
