The ancient kingdom of Mustang lies 4,000 meters high in the Himalayas, surrounded by insurmountable mountains. The centuries-old monasteries and temples form the foundation of a unique Tibetan culture on Nepalese soil. But little by little they decayed in the harsh climate and with them the unique culture. Only the restoration of the monasteries in recent years has sparked a cultural renaissance. The Italian master conservator Luigi Fieni and his friend Tsewang Bista, the nephew of the last king of Mustang, travel for four weeks through the former kingdom of Mustang in northern Nepal. The two friends have a common mission: to preserve Mustang's culture for future generations. Neighboring China in particular has the opposite interest and wants to prevent Mustang from serving as a place of refuge for Tibetan exiles. "NZZ Format" embarks on an adventurous journey to a forgotten Tibetan region.
