In the last year, Romania went through an unprecedented health crisis and every citizen of this country felt that the functioning of the medical system directly influences his life. Some of us ended up in hospitals, others had hospitalized relatives, others were afraid that we could depend on a free bed at ATI. But the problems in this field did not appear with the pandemic. The medical system in Romania means more than some hospital buildings, populated with people dressed in white coats. Behind them is, in fact, a huge and complicated machine, which swallows more than 9 billion euros a year and whose operating law has been changed 2,000 times. In a year-long documentary effort, we navigated this maze of vested interests, hubris, and complicated regulations to understand how the medical system we should rely on when we have health problems works. We dug through the archives and went back in time to show where its big problems come from, we tried to decipher the money circuit and turn it into an explanatory animation as easy as possible to understand, we talked to people who know the system and look at it from different angles: politicians, health policy specialists and doctors from several generations. This material does not offer verdicts or miraculous solutions, but tries to give a clearer picture of how the system works and what needs to be done next. -------------- Part of the costs necessary for the creation of this material were supported by a grant from the Romanian United Fund. ------------- English subtitling was done by Ioana Nartea -------------- Recorder is an online publication built by a team of journalists around these principles: honest journalism, done with passion and put to public service.
