Germany is shifting to the right, and voices warning of a repeat of 1933 are increasingly loud. Is democracy in danger after the recent electoral success of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party? In Thuringia, the far-right has become the largest force in parliament for the first time in post-World War II Germany. Some feel as if the times have gone back to the days before Hitler seized power in 1933. Three years earlier, the Nazi Party had become part of the government for the first time. The fear of losing democracy haunts many Germans. Hundreds of thousands regularly take to the streets to protest for democracy and against the far-right. But can the situation in 2024 really be compared to 1933? This documentary looks for parallels and also looks at German history in the 1980s and 1990s. At that time, neo-Nazis sought to turn the small town of Langen in Hesse into Germany’s first foreign-free city. After German reunification, right-wing extremist groups and neo-Nazis became increasingly influential in eastern Germany.
