Fake investment websites are one of the most common forms of fraud today. They cost billions in losses to investors, and in Germany alone there are thousands of cases where people fall victim to fraud because of their naivety. During their documentary, Niklas Resch and Caroline Uhl met victims and investigators and tracked down those behind these crimes. What they learned is that trying to stop the perpetrators is like fighting windmills. And sometimes the motivations of victims and perpetrators are more similar than they might imagine. Ulrike Schneider fell victim to a scam and lost more than ten thousand euros when she thought she had found a good way to invest her savings. She chose to invest her money in an online financial portal called TradeInvest90 because it promised to make a profit in a short period of time. What Schneider did not suspect was that the portal was fake, a mere tool of an international fraud gang. Adrian is a young man in his late twenties, lives in Kosovo and has no money. When he receives an offer of a well-paid job in a call center, he jumps at the chance. But he soon realizes that his job is illegal: it involves posing as a financial market expert for portals like TradeInvest90 and stealing money from German-speaking investors like Ulrike Schneider over the phone. Adrian and his colleagues swindle their victims out of millions and make a fortune themselves. The gang leader becomes a millionaire, cold-bloodedly squandering his victims’ savings. The scam lasted for several years before investigators from the Saarbrücken Criminal Police Office were able to put an end to it after a very complex investigation. But to this day, others use the same methods to defraud and cause great damage. The filmmakers have managed to delve into the depths of a highly organized fraud ring. Their film presents for the first time original recordings of what was happening in the call center. The film also compares the motivations and perspectives of the victims, the perpetrators and the investigators, and shows how the psychological impulses of the fraudsters and those who were defrauded work. #Documentary #DocumentaryDW #DW #Fraud #Internet #Wealth DW Call for dialogue: https://p.dw.com/p/OYIo More documentaries can be found on our websites in English: http://www.dw.com/ar/tv/docfilm/s-3610 / dwdocumentary / dw.stories
