About :

■ 'Little' Central Asia in the heart of Seoul! In 1980, Gwanghui-dong in Seoul was full of entertainment establishments and accommodations. After the wind of diplomatic relations between Korea and Russia blew in the 1990s, Russian peddlers began to settle here. It was easy to export goods because it was adjacent to Dongdaemun Market. After that, migrant workers who came to Korea to make money gathered in Gwanghui-dong to exchange money and send money, and a second home was formed for them. Gwanghui-dong, which remains an exotic alley near Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station, is still crowded with foreigners rather than Koreans on weekends. What are their wishes as they quietly adapt to this unfamiliar land? ■ Gwanghui-dong, the home of Central Asians The day begins at 10 a.m. on Central Asia Street, from Uzbek restaurants that light a fire in their ovens and bake traditional bread called 'samsa' to special delivery companies that welcome customers to send goods to their hometowns. Signs written in unfamiliar Cyrillic characters are visible everywhere on the street. Yana, who runs an Uzbek restaurant, first visited Korea 12 years ago with her mother, a second-generation Korean. Yana, who opened a restaurant for Uzbek people who are unfamiliar with Korean food, said that although the long business hours in Korea were difficult, she has now adapted to the long and fast-paced Korean life. Yana likes Korea, which she heard about from her grandmother when she was young and where her mother is. The reason she was able to settle down in her new home, Gwanghui-dong, is because her family is with her. ■ Meeting my hometown in a strange land People in Gwanghui-dong say that on weekends, they sometimes get confused as to whether they are in Korea or a foreign country. This is a place where you can see more foreigners than anywhere else in downtown Seoul. The stores lining the streets are crowded with Central Asians who come to send gifts to their families in their hometowns and to taste the flavors of their hometowns. Gwanghui-dong, where banks are open even on weekends for foreigners who work in other regions and visit every weekend, has become a meeting place where you can meet friends from your hometown after a long time and a place where you can dream of the day you return home.
