▣ “What’s wrong with my age!” The autobiography challenge of ‘grandmothers’! The eldest daughter born in a poor family as the breadwinner, the grandmothers who were not able to study because they were ‘women’. In Haedoe Village, the grandmothers who have lived their entire lives without knowing the Korean alphabet have gathered to hold a ‘Korean language class’ class. Although they sometimes forget the spelling of words they have studied several times, the grandmothers’ faces are filled with smiles as if they have returned to being little girls. Now, the grandmothers are happy that they can confidently write their names at the hospital, read letters, and buy things. The days when they didn’t know where the ‘account number’ and ‘amount’ fields were because they couldn’t read, and the days when they brought the withdrawal slip home and asked their children to do it are gone. The grandmothers now have a new dream. They are challenging themselves to ‘write an autobiography’ about their stories that they have kept in their hearts. ▣ The Weight of Time ‘How to Live in Those Times’ The mountain villagers who came up to escape the war built houses out of stones and tents themselves. Even though colorful murals are painted on old houses and new roads are laid in winding alleys, there is something that has not changed. It is the 'saving spirit' that allowed them to survive difficult times. People who came to the village with only a bundle of luggage lived their whole lives in houses that could barely protect them from the wind and rain. An elderly person who greeted the 'new washing machine that his daughter-in-law bought him' with a bright smile after the washing machine he had used sparingly for decades broke. An elderly person who 'saving' by turning off all the lights in the room and relying on a small desk light even in the dark of night, but who makes warm coffee for an unfamiliar camera director who visits his house on a cold day. ▣ 'Grandma' who helps and comforts each other has appeared! Crispy and delicious pancakes, hand-seasoned braised burdock, stir-fried eggplant, and raw radish salad. The people who make side dishes with care according to the tastes of the village elders are the village head and relatively 'young elderly people'. The residents of 'Sunrise Village', which has long since entered an aging society, an aged society, and a super-aged society (over 20% of the population is over 65 years old), take care of their neighbors who are growing old together in the place where they spent their youth. They share kimchi and side dishes with the elderly who live alone, visit their homes to check on their health, and take care of each other. The elderly who live alone greet the residents who come to ask about their well-being while sharing side dishes with them. Perhaps the elderly are more afraid of 'loneliness' than 'COVID-19' that has swept the entire world. The villagers take care of each other, visit their neighbors' homes to ask about their well-being, and all the villagers become friends. ▣ 'Grandma' and Cats At some point, the sound of cats crying more than babies crying can be heard in Sunrise Village. People who settled in the mountain village during their poor times and animals who came to the mountain village after being driven out by urban development. There are many residents in Sunrise Village who call themselves 'cat moms'. They provide food for stray cats, and on rainy days, they place umbrellas all over the neighborhood to provide shelter for stray cats. Residents who take care of cats that have lost their mothers share the affection they received from the villagers with the stray cats living in the neighborhood. ▣ Autobiography of 'Grandmas' published! The elderly who lived in a steep mountain village sharing affection with their neighbors had to give up many things for their families just because they were women. The story of 'Grandmas' who lived for their families despite the hardships during the times when they were able to endure because they had neighbors who were like family whenever they were out of breath and life was hard.
