Doc Mieu is one of nearly 20 military bases in the Mc.Namara electronic fence system built by the US on the southern bank of the Ben Hai River to detect and prevent the Liberation Army from crossing the 17th parallel to support the Southern battlefield. Located on a red hill with an area of about 260 hectares, at an altitude of 50m, blocking National Highway 1 and surrounded by empty fields, from here you can observe and control a large area of North Gio Linh. For that reason, this place is known as the "magic eye" of the US army. Inside Doc Mieu base, there is a sophisticated electronic signal processing control center, a heavy artillery position, in addition to tanks, armored vehicles supporting, a system of solid bunkers, surrounded by barbed wire fences mixed with anti-infiltration minefields. A battalion of US Marines is regularly stationed at Doc Mieu.
