Judah and Tamar 1 At that time Judah went away from his brothers and stayed in the house of a certain Adullamite named Hirah. 2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua; he took her as his wife and went in to her. 3 She conceived and bore a son, and his father named him Er. 4 She conceived again and bore a son; his mother named him Onan. 5 She continued and bore another son, whose name was Shelah; she was in Chezib when she gave birth to him. 6 So Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn; her name was Tamar. 7 But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord put him to death. 8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, fulfill the levirate law, and raise up offspring for your brother." 9 But Onan knew that the child would not be his; and whenever he had sex with his brother's wife he would spill his semen on the ground, so that he would not give offspring to his brother. 10 But the thing that he did was evil in the sight of the Lord, and he put him to death also. 11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up." For he said, "Lest he also die like his brothers." So Tamar went and lived in her father's house. 12 In the course of time the daughter of Shua, Judah's wife, died. And Judah was comforted, and he went up to the sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 And it was told Tamar, "Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep." 14 Then she took off her widow's garments, covered herself with a veil, and disguised herself, and sat in the entrance of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah had grown up, and she had not been given to him as a wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16 Then he came to her on the way and said to her, "Come, let me have sex with you," for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, so that you may go in with me?" 17 He said, "I will send you a young goat from the flock." She said, "Will you give me a pledge until you send it?" 18 He said, "What pledge shall I give you?" She said, "Your signet, your cord, and the staff that you hold." So he gave them to her, and she went in with him; and she conceived by him. 19 Then she arose and went, and the woman gave birth to a son of a bitch. She took off her veil and put on her widow's garments. 20 Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite to recover the pledge from the woman's hand, but he could not find her. 21 Then he asked the men of the place, "Where is the prostitute who was on the road to Enaim?" They said, "There was no prostitute here." 22 So he returned to Judah and said, "I did not find her." The men of the place also said to me, "There was no prostitute here." 23 Judah said, "Let her keep it for herself, so that we do not become a reproach. I sent the young goat to her, but you could not find her." 24 About three months later, it was told Judah, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has committed adultery, for she is pregnant." Then Judah said, "Bring her out and let her be burned." 25 And she brought her out, and sent to her father-in-law, saying, By the man whose are these I am with child. And she said, Know whose are these signet rings, and this cord, and this staff. 26 And Judah knew them, and said, She is more righteous than I, because I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he slept with her no more. 27 And it came to pass, when she was ready to give birth, that twins were in her womb. 28 And when they were born, the one put forth his hand; and the midwife took it, and tied a scarlet thread to it, and said, This one came out first. 29 And when he drew back his hand, the other came out. And she said, How did you come out? And they called his name Perez. 30 Afterward came forth his brother, who had the scarlet thread in his hand; and they called his name Zerah. And we said, We cannot go down: but if our youngest brother will go down with us, then we will go down: for we cannot see the man's face unless this our youngest brother is with us. 27 Then your servant our father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons. 28 One went away from me, and I said, "Surely he has been torn to pieces," and I have not seen him since. 29 Now if you take this one away from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. 30 Now therefore, if I go to your servant my father, and the lad does not go with us, because his life is bound up with his life. 31 If he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die. Your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave. 32 For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, "If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame to my father forever." 33 Now therefore let thy servant abide instead of the lad, and let the lad go up with his brethren. 34 For how shall I go up to my father, except the lad be with me? lest I see the evil that shall come upon my father.
