Cool days and nights encourage us to inspect the vegetable beds and prepare them for the next season. I am already removing tomatoes from the greenhouse. Some of them have not colored, they will ripen on the window sill. The night before last there was a frost, at night the temperatures drop to a few degrees above zero. I can expect that the tomatoes will soon be attacked by fungal diseases. After removing the tomato shoots (I throw them on the compost), I will thoroughly wash the greenhouse with a pressure washer. This is an important autumn procedure. Water is enough, I advise against burning sulfur in the greenhouse, chemical interference is completely unnecessary. I will mulch the beds with compost and sow leaf lettuces, rocket and mustard greens for the winter. I will also mulch the remaining beds with compost, and on some I will additionally sow green manure or spinach. I will mulch the field tomato bed, intended for zucchini next season, with compost and sow spinach on it for spring harvest. I will designate the zucchini bed for tomatoes, so I will sow mustard on the compost mulch, and in October I will plant winter garlic through the middle. The cucumber bed will be intended for growing strawberries. I will add horn shavings and compost, and at the end of September I will plant strawberry seedlings. I am also harvesting beans for dry grain. Next year, they will be grown in the same place. Beans, like tomatoes, are vegetables that can grow in one place for several years.
