In search of copper and silver, I disassemble various small items for metal, mainly Soviet electrical appliances, in addition to non-ferrous metals, they contain contacts made of technical silver. I also plan to separate silver contacts without soldering with a gas burner, but by a mechanical method for breaking. When the contact plate bends, the silver contact soldered to it breaks off and falls off. This method is very good for separating small silver contacts, but large contacts made of silver alloy are already more difficult to separate, since bending a thick contact plate, whether brass or copper, is physically quite difficult, such contacts are easier to solder with a burner. Also, some contacts with this method of separation simply crumble into pieces, this is most likely the so-called graphite, silver with graphite powder, these contacts are very fragile and such contacts are also better soldered with a burner. Silver-on-copper contacts are also separated mechanically, they are removed together with the copper backing, the contact plate at the rivet attachment point is bitten with nippers and turned with pliers and the contact falls off. Silver must be removed from copper in aqua regia, the copper backing will dissolve and the silver contact will remain. It will not be possible to unsolder silver from such a contact, it usually melts together with the copper. In addition to obtaining contacts when dismantling various electrical appliances for scrap metal, there is also a good catch of non-ferrous metals, especially copper and brass, so the overall result of dismantling is not bad, although there is quite a bit of copper in each individual device.
