In the slums in which they mostly live in Slovakia, many Roma are trapped in poverty. They have few prospects, are discriminated against and are rarely integrated into village life. More on this in the current Weltspiegel documentary: "Roma in Slovakia - is there a way out of poverty?" ???????? https://1.ard.de/weltspiegel_doku_rom... ???????? More than 9 percent of the population in Slovakia are Roma. Many of them live in slums where there is a lack of infrastructure and hygiene. And health care is also poor. Life expectancy for Roma men is 55 years, women 5 years longer. Whole generations lack future prospects, they are trapped in poverty. ARD correspondent Danko Handrick investigates why neither the Roma nor Slovakian society and politics are succeeding in overcoming the slums and ghettos and leaving them behind. He visited various slums to do this. There he met underage parents, many children, a school and he visited a community that has managed to integrate the Roma population into community life.
