Tons of gold were extracted from Serra Pelada, which led everyone to believe that the gold deposits would be able to make the miners rich. However, most of the miners did not manage to get rich, and what is worse, many died while working. The working conditions were very precarious, with intense heat, damaged ladders, highly dangerous ravines, and iron monoxide dust in the air - which was inhaled by the workers, even though it is harmful to the lungs. But despite all these factors, the miners worked day and night in the hope of “bamburrar” - an expression related to the fact of getting rich.
