SSA MARIA ELENA RICCIONI For many years now, the main examination for the study of the gastrointestinal tract has been endoscopy, in particular gastroscopy for the esophagus, stomach and duodenum and colonoscopy for the colon and rectum. However, the small intestine is excluded from these investigations, a section of about 7 meters that today can be studied with a new method, device-assisted enteroscopy and AED, an endoscopy of the small intestine that not only has the possibility of studying the intestinal tract to highlight any lesions, such as the case of the video pill that is ingested and records images that are then analyzed, but also has the possibility of carrying out therapeutic interventions during the examination. To learn more about the examination, what indications it has and how the procedure is performed, we met with Professor Maria Elena Riccioni of the UOC of Surgical Endoscopy of the Fondazione Policlinico A. Gemelli IRCCS. Among the questions: What is the main indication for performing small intestine endoscopy (obscure hemorrhages) which patients can benefit from it? Which pathologies are treated? (primary tumors or metastases, polypoid syndromes, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia) Which instruments are used? (hemostasis, polyp removal, biopsies, tattoos for surgery, balloons for stenosis in Crohn's) How is the investigation performed? (anesthesia care, deep sedation and radiology in "scopy" to control the progression of the endoscope) What was considered the black box of the intestine, an unexplored black box today can finally be studied and treated, how many patients can benefit from it? (one digestive hemorrhage out of 20, 5% of those who arrive in the emergency room)
