Meet the all-electric G-Class! Mercedes has finally unveiled the all-electric G580. The question is, will this all-electric G-Class ruin the legacy of the world-famous SUV? Let’s look at the design first. Fortunately, the biggest changes have been made on the inside, with the all-new G-Class retaining the classic boxy shape of its predecessor. Up front, there’s a redesigned grille and a redesigned lower bumper. The sides of the car still have trim, although this electric variant has a thin blue stripe! Out back, there’s a redesigned rear bumper, and the tailgate, where the spare tire used to be, now houses charging cables! Step inside, and the G580 is just as stylish and well-built as its predecessors. High-quality materials are soft to the touch throughout, and the seats are very comfortable. The 580 gets a new steering wheel, updated infotainment and digital instrument cluster screens, and a number of other upgrades to the centre console and dashboard. In terms of performance, there are a few options. For those who don’t want to go all-electric, there’s a 3.0-litre diesel and 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol straight-six that produce 367bhp and 449bhp respectively. Meanwhile, the AMG G63 makes 585bhp, and all models come with a nine-speed automatic transmission. As for the G580, it’s powered by four electric motors with incredible performance that combine to produce 587bhp and a whopping 1,164Nm of torque! That’s plenty of power, but since the car weighs over 3 tonnes, it takes 4.7 seconds to reach 100km/h. The entry-level diesel G-Class costs £136,000, the all-electric G580 starts at around £160,000 and the most powerful AMG G63 costs around £185,000. With that in mind, should you choose the all-electric G580 over the G63?! You'll have to join Mat to find out for yourself!
