International Relations expert Paulo Bittencourt provides details of the actions of Syrian rebels that resulted in the seizure of control of the capital Damascus and other cities in Syria, toppling the regime of Bashar al-Assad after 24 years in power. The dictator fled the capital in a plane as the rebel offensive approached. Political prisoners were also reportedly released. The information was released in a televised statement on the state channel. The opposition reported that the rebels invaded the presidential palace and tore up documents from the deposed government, while soldiers and police abandoned their posts.
