ALS is the abbreviation for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease of the central and peripheral nervous system. Also known as 'Ice Bucket' disease or by the well-known scientist Stephen Hawking. The symptoms: The muscles continue to deteriorate, paralysis and breathing problems are common consequences. Jacky noticed early on that something was wrong with her body: During her training, she was often ill and had problems with her eyes. A doctor advised her to go to a neurologist, but Jacky ignored the advice until one day she could no longer get out of bed. First she is diagnosed with the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis - but that's not the end of it: when she suddenly starts to feel severe pain in her lungs, she goes back to the hospital. Then comes the shock: Jacky has ALS and may only have two years to live. She still hasn't really processed the diagnosis: "I live with it, but I don't want to know too much!" Physiotherapy also helps her understand what is happening and will happen to her body. Everyday things like cooking pasta or washing her hair become a challenge and she needs help.
