Detmar Heller was taken prisoner by the Russians immediately after the end of the war in 1945. In the North Caucasus, the then 17-year-old had to work in the grain warehouse or in the coal mine. Working as a painter gave him variety - he got out of the camp and met helpful and warm-hearted people. However, feeding the prisoners remained a major problem. Heller remembers how they tripped up sheep that were wandering around in order to smuggle them into the camp and eat them there.
