On a stretch of Havana's coastline, the Riomar building stands, dilapidated and almost completely uninhabitable. I knew of the existence of the building, an architectural heritage of the city from the mid-twentieth century; but I had never been inside it, until one rainy afternoon I went inside to take shelter. Located on 1ra between 0 and 2, Miramar, its magnificence is still imposing, despite the wear and tear. Its walls hide secrets of a time of splendor and another of decadence. The proximity to the sea required intense maintenance, but over time it was neglected. The building progressively deteriorated. Some families moved out, while others stayed and prayed that the effect of saltpeter and lack of attention would not defeat the building. At present, barely a dozen apartments in the central block house about 14 families.
