Note: This episode is about suicide, suicidal thoughts and how to deal with them. When Sarah was diagnosed with depression by her doctor, she could hardly believe it herself. After all, she has everything she needs: friends, family, a shared flat, a job - a life. Sarah is slowly learning that depression means more than just "being sad". She tells Frank about her time in a psychiatric hospital, how she dealt with suicidal thoughts and what helped her during this difficult time. This also includes Sarah's mother Beate and Sarah's best friend Eva. The two talk to Frank about how they tried to be there for Sarah and even accompany her on what might be her final journey. It was important for both of them to show understanding for Sarah's situation. It went so far that Sarah's mother made her an incredible promise: she would help Sarah apply for euthanasia if the depression did not improve. This support is particularly important, explains psychotherapist Anke Glaßmeyer, stressing that there is always a way out - even if those affected often do not see it. In this first film in our new series “Why are mental illnesses still a taboo?” Frank wants to find out what else can help, how Sarah is doing today and how important her friends and family were to Sarah. Why do we let animals suffer? Do we drink too much? Or: What does porn do to us? My team and I are interested in questions that have something directly to do with our lives, but also topics that are important to all of us and are often only discussed superficially. We look for answers to these questions, week after week - openly, honestly and independently. We don't meet experts for this, we are there: at the slaughterhouse, at the swingers' party, while proselytizing in the pedestrian zone. And because we want to get to know as many perspectives as possible in our search, we always spend several weeks on one question. In the end, we want to give an answer, even if it isn't easy for us. With each video - and especially in the discussions with you - we get a little closer to answering the big, tricky questions.
