Bisphosphonates are a category of drugs used to treat diseases that alter the metabolism of bone tissue. They are used for bone neoplasms, Paget's disease, and primary and secondary forms of osteoporosis. These drugs have a double effect: they block the reabsorption of bone tissue - and for this reason they will be increasingly used on a large scale also for the prevention of osteoporosis - and they are also drugs that block the vascularization of tissues, which makes their use essential for the treatment of bone tumors. Since 2004, it has been seen that there is a late, rare and secondary complication, osteonecrosis of the jaws, a process of bone necrosis. We talk about it in the interview with Paolo Brunamonti Binello, dentist at Galliera in Genoa, broadcast on Salute88.
