It is a remake of Demon's Souls (2009), originally developed by the Japanese studio FromSoftware and became the first part of the Souls series. Just like the original game, Demon's Souls is an action/RPG where the player is asked to explore the world and fight various enemies. According to the developers, everything that was in the original game is also in the remake; however, the remake also adds new weapons, armor, rings, and new items called "Seeds" that give the player character temporary resistance to effects such as poison, fire, and bleeding. As in the original, the player character's equipment has weight, and a heavily loaded character moves slower - some aspects of this system have been revised. For example, in the original game, medicinal herbs did not have weight, and the player character could carry hundreds of such items; in the remake, they do have weight, and more effective medicinal items have more weight, which sensibly limits the number of them the character can carry. One of the new modes, called “Fractured World,” changes all locations to be mirrored, so that a corridor that used to lead to the right now leads to the left. The game also features a photo mode, which allows the player to pause the game to take a screenshot — something that wasn’t possible in the original. Filters from the photo mode can also be applied to the gameplay itself, including a “classic mode” filter that aims to recreate the distinctive color scheme of the original PlayStation 3 game. While the Souls series is known for its difficulty, Bluepoint has stated that the remake will not feature separate difficulty levels.
