This week, a demolition company started demolishing a kilometre-long production hall at aluminium smelter DAMCO Aluminium Delfzijl Coöperatie UA, popularly known as Aldel, located in Delfzijl. Aldel was declared bankrupt on 22 October 2022 as a result of sharply increased gas prices and a lack of government support. The company, which consumed significant amounts of gas for its smelter, saw costs rise despite attempts to survive the crisis with a 'pilot light'. The company was forced to file for bankruptcy. Remarkably, this was the third time in the aluminium smelter's history that bankruptcy was declared. Bankruptcy was previously declared at the end of 2013 and after a restart in March 2015, the group went bankrupt again in August 2017. After a takeover by York Capital and a management buy-out at the end of 2021, a restart was made. In April of this year, GIGA Storage BV announced that it had purchased part of the site for the development of Europe's largest battery for energy storage. Aldel's closed distribution network and the connection to the high-voltage network have been taken over. The battery will store sustainably generated energy in the Delfzijl area and release it when there is more demand for electricity than supply. Batteries are seen as a crucial way to keep the energy network stable with the growing amount of renewable energy, which is not generated continuously as in a gas or coal-fired power station. How long the demolition work will take is not known at this time. There are also no concrete plans yet for the use of the remaining part of the site.
