It all seems so perfect in the Hemonystraat in Zuid: a central location and beautiful, seemingly well-maintained houses. But behind the front door of Carolus van Soest, it looks very different. Peeling paint, the ceiling that is coming down and leaks. 'These leaks in particular are an absolute disaster.' Van Soest has lived in the same private rental property for 32 years for a reason: he loves the neighbourhood, knows almost every paving stone and has his friends there. And it is especially that love for the neighbourhood that keeps him in his home. Because: 'Normally I would have left long ago.' According to him, the contrast is enormous between what you see when you walk through the street and what is happening in the homes themselves. 'Everyone thinks that the owners take good care of the properties. But they only do that with their owner-occupied homes or with rental homes that are converted into luxury apartments when the old residents have been evicted.' In private rental homes like the one he lives in, it works like this, he says: 'The front facade is being renovated, but if you see the back of your front door... yes, it looks completely different,' he says, pointing to the peeling paint. In a telephone response, the manager of Carolus' home says he cannot comment, but has forwarded the request to the owner. The owner was not yet available for comment. ❌ ❌ ❌ AT5 - Echt Amsterdams Nieuws Subscribe to our YouTube channel here: / at5amsterdam Tips or comments?
