KFA Moderation: Leman TOYKAN Spinoza's 'Irregularity' and Philosophy Spinoza's philosophy is related to the proposition that "The thing that a free man thinks least about is death; his philosophy is not a contemplation on death, but on life." In this respect, his philosophy is based on life against death and captivity, and on the actual essence of man, the effort to exist. His philosophy on life focuses on the meanings specific to his nature, without seeing man as a kingdom within a kingdom. His affirmation of life, instead of glorifying superstitions and dogmas, resulted in the "cherem" penalty. The religious 'cherem' penalty used to establish discipline against irregularity means losing one's place both in this world and in the transcendent world for the subject. Ultimately, after Spinoza was ostracized with this penalty, he was called the "atheist Jew of Voorburg" after his book, which was alleged to contain irregular statements, was banned. While Spinoza distanced himself from a life full of superstitions, he focused on the depth of pleasure in a life dominated by those mental meanings. In his philosophy, it is important for a free and active person to struggle against captivity, to direct himself to the horizon of thought and to grasp his own power. His attitude towards this struggle pursues desire, which arises from reason and becomes active as he takes action. His desire-based philosophy of life comes to the fore from different perspectives in ontology, epistemology, ethics and also in political philosophy.
