The green transformation of the economy is fully entering the implementation phase. The new leadership of the European Commission wants to combine the fulfillment of green goals with maintaining competitiveness and social measures for the next five years. One of the pillars of the European decarbonization policy is the emissions trading system. Significant changes await him, including the end of free allowances, expansion to new sectors. At the same time, the Union is introducing the so-called carbon duty, which is supposed to protect European companies from unfair competition from third countries. What are the key initiatives of the European Commission for the decarbonisation of the economy in the next five years and how does Slovakia stand towards them? Are we ready to use financial instruments to help reduce the social burden or strengthen the competitiveness of the industry undergoing a green transformation? What effect will the introduction of the so-called carbon tax, specifically in combination with the planned emissions trading system reforms?
