A gigantic mudslide devastated large parts of Brienz, Canton of Bern. This is the second severe weather disaster after 2005. How are the residents reacting and what does science say? Are such extreme events becoming more and more the norm? ???? Back then, the Trachtbach and Glyssibach rivers suffered the largest natural disaster in the village's history. Two people lost their lives and the damage amounted to EUR 16 million. "I immediately smelled the smell of rotten eggs. This smell has followed me ever since." Since then, Brienz has invested heavily in flood protection. Peter Zumbrunn is shocked by the scale of the latest disaster. But at the same time he is convinced that the right thing was done. "You can't imagine what would have happened without these measures." Tobias Müller accompanies him during the clean-up work. One person affected reports that 70 people had to be evacuated during the storm. Alexandra Schild lives just 40 meters from the Mühlebach. When the storm breaks out, she flees headlong to the church, which is a little higher up. A short time later, the stream floods her house. Tobias Müller meets her and finds out how she experiences the dramatic events and how she finds her way back to normality. What exactly happened at the Mühlebach? Shortly after the disaster, hazard experts are on site and analyze the exact course of events. How much precipitation really fell and why was so much debris mobilized? Initial data show that the force of the water has torn a 10-meter-deep ravine into the stream bed and set rock blocks weighing up to 300 tons in motion. The structural measures were nowhere near enough to stop the current catastrophe. Have mistakes been made? Did the experts misjudge the stream and how safe is Brienz today? Lammbach - the sleeping giant Of the four Brienz torrents, the Lammbach is the one with the greatest potential danger. Up to 2 million cubic meters of loose debris are stored in the stream bed and the rubble heaps, which could trigger a massive mudslide in an extreme case. Tobias Müller asks what measures are being taken to get the Lammbach under control and what effects an extreme event would have.
