19/6/2024 A4 - Space of contemporary culture Debate_A4: Democracy under pressure - civil society at a crossroads (discussion) Slovakia is in a period when the fragile democratic foundations of the country are exposed to unprecedented pressure. Gross interference by government power systematically divides society, threatens several democratic principles by restricting the independence of public and public-law institutions, cultural organizations or parts of the civil sector organized in non-governmental organizations. In this context, it seems to be an urgent task to look for ways to face growing authoritarianism and what alternative forms of engaged defense or civil participation can strengthen the position of the wider democratic citizenry against state interventions. We don't just want to describe and deepen the current sense of doom, we would like to (re)discover concrete visions and steps with you through discussion that can contribute to the restoration of wider social trust and confidence in democracy and the creation of a fairer, more solidary and more emancipated society. How can we contribute to the management of political and value conflict in a democracy from a civil position so that it remains constructive and does not threaten democratic principles or exclude the weaker and variously disadvantaged from the process? How can we strengthen interpersonal and social trust, which is crucial for maintaining democracy? What role does the mutual solidarity of different social groups play in strengthening trust and protecting democracy? What alternative models of participatory democracy can strengthen citizen involvement and balance the power of the state? How can we effectively defend the independence of democratic institutions from powerful interventions by the state? How can civil initiatives effectively respond to the repressive measures of the government and parliament? Discussed by: Karolína Miková - consultant, trainer and facilitator working in PDCS. Professionally, it mainly focuses on the solution and prevention of public conflicts, participation of citizens in decision-making on public matters, development of civil society, deliberative democracy, community development and intersectoral cooperation. Barbara Lášticová - director of the Social Communication Research Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. In his research, he mainly deals with how prejudices against different groups in society arise, and how they can be mitigated through targeted interventions. She is also interested in the influence of psychology on various forms of political behavior.
