On July 14, 1865, the four Englishmen Edward Whymper, Reverent Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas, Douglas Hadow, the French mountain guide Michel Auguste Croz and the two Swiss mountain guides, father and son Taugwalder, were the first to reach the summit of the Matterhorn. It was a great moment for humanity, a tremendous success in the history of mountaineering. But the triumph turned into a tragedy: on the descent, one of the climbers slipped and took three of his rope companions with him to their deaths. Then the rope broke. Or was it cut? Was this misfortune an accident or cold-blooded murder? In a meticulous forensic reconstruction of the events, the "DOK" film gets to the bottom of these questions and shows what really happened on the Matterhorn 150 years ago.
