After World War II, Bandera guerrillas operated on the new territory of Poland. The Ukrainian Insurgent Army operated in the southeastern provinces, inhabited largely by Ukrainians. Initially, the communist authorities were in no hurry to destroy the Ukrainian underground. After the death of General Świerczewski, Operation Vistula began. However, its main goal was still not to fight the UPA.
