De Fato Podcast #62 With economist Marcio Pochmann Brazil under threat from crime and fanaticism Neoliberalism was consolidated in Brazil in the 1990s and profoundly changed economic and labor relations. It was the end of an era of industrialization that left a large part of the population outside the system, redirected to the agro-export model and the provision of services. This created what economist and president of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Marcio Pochmann, calls the surplus mass, for whom capitalism has nothing to offer. According to him, the path is open to organized crime and religious extremism. In this edition of De Fato, Pochmann begins by explaining the role of IBGE throughout history in the development of Brazilian society and the conversation yields several reflections on relevant current issues. Among them, the growth of the extreme right with its anti-system discourse, when perhaps it is the order itself; the dangers of the monopoly of information concentrated in big techs for national sovereignty; the lack of data on climate issues; and the political issues that hinder the country's development, such as the high interest rates charged by the Central Bank. The De Fato podcast is produced by Brasil de Fato RS in partnership with SindBancários of Porto Alegre and the Region. Every Saturday, an interviewee will discuss the main events in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and the world.
