Today we came to our farm to plant more bananas. They are a different variety called morado. The fruit is red on the outside and yellow on the inside. They are very sweet and delicious. We also have a new orchid. It has purple and white flowers. Darry dug some holes and we planted our banana trees. To celebrate, we drank some refreshing coconut juice. We are collecting firewood - we cut it and stack it under the canopy. This is great, we will have enough firewood to last for many months. Inside each log live small native bees. They are called kiyot. Darry told us that these bees are similar to honey bees, as they also produce honey, but in smaller quantities. Several people came to our farm to clear the coconut trees of parasitic ferns. In exchange for their work, they get to keep all the ripe coconuts they can find. They took their machetes and got to work. These trees had not been cared for before, which is why they have so many parasitic ferns growing on them. They are called governor's ferns. They grow very thickly, and when they reach the top of the coconut, the trees die. These ferns also house dangerous creatures, such as centipedes and snakes. We are happy to get rid of these parasites so that our trees will grow healthy and bear fruit in the next few months. After cleaning the trees, the workers collected the coconuts. From the coconut meat they will make copra. From the coconut shells they will also make charcoal. They have a wonderful helper - a hard-working carabao.
