Performance of the ancient play Sangthong, Daowadueng Dance, at the cultural festival in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on 9 July 2013 at the National Theatre. Sponsor: Preecha Thammaphipop; Recording and sound team: Ocean Media Co., Ltd. Performers: Students from the Thai Dance Department, Faculty of Performing Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, College of Dramatic Arts. Daowadueng Dance is a standard dance that is an original set, which His Royal Highness Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong composed the lyrics. The lyrics are: Luang Senae Duriyang, the creator of the dance moves by Mom Khem Kunjara Na Ayutthaya, was used in the ancient play Sangthong. In this scene, the actors playing Indra and his queen are seated on a platform, with Vishnukarma and Matali sitting on both sides, the Gandharvas holding musical instruments in front, and the angels and fairies sitting on both sides. When the scene begins, the angels and fairies will dance together to pay homage to the “Daowadueng Dance”, which is the dance of the angels and fairies. The performance begins with dance moves in a slow tempo, then gradually increases in tempo. The important characteristic of the dance moves is that they do not have meanings that correspond to the lyrics, because they are not performed according to the lyrics like other standard dances. Instead, they are dance moves that are consistent throughout the song, especially the dance moves where hands are raised and crossed over the chest and the palms are lightly slapped in time with the rhythm, along with the feet (in the lyrics of “Matali Achakhi”). It is said that this dance move was created by Prince Phithakmontri, the younger brother of Somdet Phra Sri Suriyentharamat. Her Majesty Queen Phutthaloetla Naphalai, King Rama II, invented it along with the fan dance around two hundred years ago. She copied it from the chest-thumping dance in the Zen dance ceremony of the Muslim Zen sect, which the Westerners called Shia (Shilis). She adjusted the postures to be soft and graceful according to the principles of Thai dance. The performance can be divided into the following steps: Step 1: Dance in the Hoe song (a dance posture that shows the journey of angels and fairies in a procession. The dance postures are standard postures that have been passed down.) Step 2: Dance to the lyrics in the Takhing song (the lyrics describe the beauty of the angels and fairies’ clothing and ornaments). Step 3: Dance to the lyrics in the Chao Sen song (the lyrics describe Indra and the magnificent beauty of his palace and his royal carriage). Step 4: Dance to the Rua melody of the Daowadueng dance lyrics. The piphat orchestra performs the Hoe and Rua songs and sings the Takhing song. Daowadueng, the vast heavenly world, is a place of great pleasure and beauty in all aspects. All kinds of abundance in the wish, The gods emerge with beautiful complexion, Beautiful in their imperfect ornaments, The nymphs adorn their graceful and gentle demeanor, Beautiful in gold and diamonds, Singing the song of Chao Sen, Somdet Phra Inmarin wearing the crown, Holding the magical arrow with the skill of a Vajiravudh, Guarding the divine boundary as ever, The Asura Indra is never oppressed, The three Indra palaces (repeat) Standing tall and beautiful in the sky, With four gables covered with clean mats, The leaves are decorated with glass, The gable is graceful and swaying (repeat) The brahli that has lowered the gable is eager, The golden gable is decorated with thousand of golden flowers (repeat whole foot) The royal vehicle, Vejyan, glass chariot (repeat) Beautiful and elegant, The graceful and soft yoke helps to compensate (repeat) The vines support the floating throne.
