Rediscovering Korea 'Daegu Metropolitan City, Where Yesterday and Today Meet' 1. Palgongsan Mountain, the Symbol of Dalgubeol - Donghwasa Temple and Gatbawi Mountain, which offers beautiful scenery and is full of cultural heritages that embody the history of Daegu from Silla to Joseon, can be said to be the symbol of Daegu. Donghwasa Temple, a thousand-year-old temple filled with the energy of the phoenix that appears only in times of peace and the auspicious paulownia tree, is where Samyeongdaesa, who raised an army of monks during the Imjin War, commanded the army from the Yeongnam Monk Army Headquarters. In addition, the Gwanbong Stone Seated Buddha, better known as 'Gatbawi' at 850m above sea level, is one of the true sights of Palgongsan Mountain. This Buddha statue has a hat shaped like a college mortarboard, so every year around this time, people line up to pray for good luck with the college entrance exams... Let's visit Palgongsan Mountain, which holds the peace and well-being of the country, and the big and small wishes for life, and stop by the historical site of General Shin Sung-gyeom at the foot of Palgongsan Mountain to pay tribute to his patriotism and loyalty as a founding father of the Goryeo Dynasty. 2. Tradition is alive - Daegu Herbal Medicine Market Daegu has the only 'Herbal Medicine Market' in Korea, which is named after the character 'ryeong' (令) because it was opened by order of the king. The herbal medicine market was a distribution center for high-quality medicinal herbs, where the royal family first selected the herbs and then herbal medicine merchants from all over the country gathered to make transactions. Even now, over 200 oriental medical clinics, herbal medicine stores, and herbal medicine merchants continue its 350-year history. Daegu, which has been a transportation hub since ancient times due to the development of waterways and land routes such as the Nakdong River and Mungyeong Pass, had many large markets where it was said that all the goods of the three southern provinces gathered... We met Director Lee Yong-sik, who has been running a herbal medicine shop in Yakryeongsi for three generations, and heard stories of simple life related to the market. 3. Alleys, intoxicated by the scent of art - Artist Street and the redrawing road In the alleys of Daegu, there are traces of tea houses and music appreciation rooms that served as spaces for creation and reflection for numerous refugee artists during the Korean War. One of them is the classical music appreciation room 'Nokhyang' that has been in operation for two generations since it opened in 1946. Lee Jung-seob drew on the silver paper inside cigarette packs, and the greatest writers of the time, including Cho Ji-hoon, Park Mok-wol, and Gu Sang, wrote here... The scent of culture and art that soaked the alleys of Jung-gu half a century ago is coming back to life at Bangcheon Market in Jung-gu. Starting with the 350m mural street commemorating the late singer Kim Gwang-seok, a native of Daegu, young artists are flocking to the area, transforming the traditional markets that were in decline into new cultural streets. Let’s visit Jung-gu Artist Street, where you can feel nostalgia in the music flowing from an old gramophone. 4. 100-Year History Street and Cheongna Hill The alleys of downtown Daegu, called “100-Year History Street” because they contain the 100-year history of Daegu, are lined with Western-style houses, churches, cathedrals, schools, etc. built by missionaries. The old buildings line the streets, making it feel as if you’re walking down a street 100 years ago. Cheongna Hill, the setting for the song “Thinking of a Comrade,” houses the second-generation descendants of the first Western apple tree in Korea, which was brought to Korea in 1899 by Dr. Johnson, the first director of Dongsan Medical Center, for missionary purposes. This gives us a glimpse into the history of Daegu, the city of apples. The 100-Year History Street is also where the Daegu Independence Movement began in 1919. At the end of the alley is the old house of national poet Lee Sang-hwa, who is well-known for his poem “Does Spring Come to the Stolen Fields?”, allowing you to feel the spirit of resistance during the dark days of Japanese colonial rule. Let’s take a stroll down the alleys of Daegu, where the breath of 100 years of turbulent modern and contemporary history lives and breathes. 5. Red ripening autumn - Pyeonggwang-dong Apple Village Daegu apples, which began with apple trees brought in by missionaries, have become a representative specialty of Daegu. In particular, Pyeonggwang-dong apples are said to have a crisper taste and do not go soft as easily as apples from other regions, thanks to the weather with large daily temperature ranges and the soil. As the only remaining group apple cultivation area in Daegu and the last pride of Daegu apples, Pyeonggwang-dong has an 83-year-old Hongok tr
