The life of the land, the land of life The possibilities and limitations of self-sufficient food gardening in a changing world Hello! I am Iván Gyulai, ecologist, president of the "Ecological Institute for Sustainable Development" Foundation. I am associated with the "sustainable village" initiative in Gömörszőlős, the film series "Gizzard Talk" and the practice of soil-renewing gardening called compost-leaving deep mulch, which is being followed by more and more people. I am a committed supporter of the natural, of living together with nature, I confess that the Earth is not made of iron, not of artificial fertilizers, not of chemicals, but from the respect and love of life. Humanity has fallen into a vicious circle, its technical capabilities and the macroeconomic model of the consumer society spurred population growth to such an extent that it became the driving force of the growth compulsion. Every day, 235,000 more people need to be fed and their needs met, while the available natural capital is decreasing despite the increase in the efficiency of our technical capabilities, and at many points we have exceeded the biosphere's carrying capacity. Humanity, which is constantly expanding in numbers and needs, should be provided for under deteriorating environmental conditions. There is no scientific or technical solution to this formula, the correct answer can only be found on an ethical basis. Voluntary withdrawal would involve the least pain. Is there any chance of that? It would be time to leave the land alone, to allow it to renew itself according to its own rules, to restore cooperation between its inhabitants. I would like to highlight in my presentation that conscious and instinctive gardening is far more than self-sufficiency or romance. To convince you that without a fundamental change in attitude, there will be no livable future, and that the principle of living and letting live and coexistence based on respect for both nature and our fellow humans is a matter of life and death. And we will need this kind of compassion very much in the future... ❤ x Our time is short, our tasks are many.
