At the beginning of 546 BC, after the fall of Sardis, the capital of the Lydian king Croesus, the Persian ruler Kurush, known to the Greeks as Kyros and in the common Latinized form today as Cyrus, ruled over most of Asia Minor. According to Herodotus's Book I of Histories, his troops pacified the last pockets of resistance, incited every now and then by those among the Lydians who still could not come to terms with the fall of their kingdom, one of the four most important powers in the region. Cyrus' priority was to occupy the coastal cities inhabited by the Ionian Greeks, thanks to which he could acquire the first fleet in the history of his empire.
