Cycas revoluta is a plant that has existed for about 300 million years. However, it often causes problems when grown at home. In order for the cycad to be in good shape, it must be provided with the right conditions. The most important thing is light, lots of light. Many sources recommend diffused light for the cycad, which is not true. The plant loves direct sun, but it must adapt to it. Therefore, the amount of sunlight should be gradually increased. One of my specimens, after hardening off, goes to the south balcony, where it stays until the first frost. However, the plants do not always look so good. A year ago, I received a plant that, despite the large amount of light, looked very bad. The cause of this condition was forced air heating, which dried out the air in the room very much. The plant was transplanted to a permeable substrate and spent the entire summer in a very sunny position. In December, it was placed in a bright room with a temperature of 14-16 degrees. Today it is starting to sprout new leaves. It is strongly illuminated so that the young leaves do not stretch out in pursuit of light. During the period when the plant is sprouting new leaves, the plant should not be moved. Turning the pot will cause the young leaves to curl. Although cycads do not like dry air, I do not mist them. Humidifiers provide humidity in the room. I water and fertilize the plants sparingly. Cycads grow very slowly and do not require many nutrients, unlike palms, with which they are often confused.
